Psychological treatment can be very effective at managing conditions like insomnia and other sleep disorders. You will uncover the connection between your thoughts, behaviors, and sleep patterns. You’ll learn how to reframe thoughts and behaviors that inhibit sleep, and choose new beliefs and behaviors that enhance the quality of your sleep.
The first step to help you to sleep better is a full and through discussion about your sleep problem with one of our consultant. This is carried out by a video call or telephone at your convinience.
You might be asked to where a finger probe or we can use your fitness tracker data to wear in your sleep. This will provide clinical information that will be analysed by our Consultants to ensure an accurate diagnosis is made. Then a further appointment will be arranged for the results.
Depending on the outcome of your diagnosis the Consultant will recommend the most suitable treatment pathway for your condition.
Insomnia is the difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep. You also might find yourself waking up very early, and not being able to get back to sleep again.
You may have nightmares if you are stressed, anxious, depressed or withdrawing from drugs such as minor tranquillisers or antidepressants. They are sometimes caused as an adverse effect of medication and common following a traumatic event.
These occur during deep sleep and may be caused by stress or when normal sleep patterns have been broken. Both are more common in children.
During the dreaming (REM) phase of sleep, limb muscles are limp and effectively paralysed. In a small number of people sleep paralysis does not occur and they may get up and act out their dreams or behave in strange or dangerous ways, including binge eating or attacking their partner which they cannot remember when they wake up.
People sometimes have hallucinations as they are falling asleep or while they are waking up.
If you are experiencing extreme daytime sleepiness, this may be caused by a condition called narcolepsy. Symptoms include falling asleep frequently, throughout the day, and experiencing vivid images and voices as you drop off to sleep.
Sleep apnoea means that you stop breathing for short periods while you are asleep, and this causes disturbed and poor-quality sleep.
Restless legs syndrome (RLS), is a neurological condition causing an irresistible urge to move the legs. The conditions can be worsened by stress.
